So much for all those rumors about Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki being on the outs.
The golfer and tennis player are now engaged to be married after McIlroy proposed on New Year’s Eve. Each athlete shared the good news on their Twitter accounts:

McIlroy called the engagement his first “victory of the year.”
Caroline shared the same three photos and added her commentary:

McIlroy and Wozniacki have been dating since at least July 2011. The two met at a Klitschko fight in Germany, but Rory was with ex-girlfriend Holly Sweeney at the time. He later broke up with Sweeney, his childhood girlfriend, and Sweeney said that Rory always had a thing for Caroline.
The two have had a tumultuous relationship.
Both of their performances have struggled since they’ve been together, and they’ve been criticized for their relationship. McIlroy’s countryman Graeme McDowell said McIlroy was getting tired out by the relationship. Analyst Johnny Miller said over the summer that McIlroy was struggling because of his relationship. Nick Faldo criticized McIlroy while he struggled, and Gary Player made a comment indicating he felt McIlroy needs to find the right wife. That’s a lot of criticism to face.
The two also have gone through multiple breakup rumors. They faced rumors of a breakup over the summer and then again in October, but each time they denied there was an issue. They also faced rumors of an engagement last year, but the real engagement came a year later.
McIlroy had a down year in 2013, but he said a lot of that had to do with legal issues rather than his relationship. Now that his legal matters are settled, we’ll find out in 2014 how much the relationship affects him.
