Serena Williams on Tuesday shared a post on social media to defend her choice to appear in Kendrick Lamar’s halftime show at the Super Bowl.
Lamar was the musical act chosen to perform during halftime of Super Bowl LIX at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, La., on Sunday. He received a lot of attention for escalating his ongoing beef with fellow rapper, Drake. Williams made a surprise appearance at the end of the show and was seen doing a C-walk dance.
Many people thought that Williams’ inclusion in the show was aimed at ribbing Drake even further considering the two used to date. Williams seemed to address that speculation with her social media post.

“When @kendricklamar and team called and was like ‘we’ve been trying to do something forever, what about this? We loved your crip walk at the Olympics after you won the gold medal.’
“I’m like Super Bowl? Are you serious? When in the world would I ever be able to dance at a superbowl? (Never) let’s do it! I knew my winning dance after the @olympics would pay off one day. End of story,” Williams wrote in her Instagram post.
In other words, Williams is saying that being in the show had nothing to do with Drake. And that could be true. Maybe to her, she only thought of it as a cool opportunity to be part of a Super Bowl halftime show — how often does someone receive that opportunity? Maybe she didn’t realize that it would be part of an ulterior motive from Lamar to mock Drake.
Whatever the case, Williams was not spared from criticism over her appearance.
That’s why she is defending herself now.
