Serena Williams ‘proud’ of all-American US Open final
Serena Williams is on maternity leave from the WTA Tour, which has opened things up for new players to emerge in her absence. But if you think that just because she’s not around and other women are taking the spotlight that she would be jealous, you would be wrong.
On Friday, Williams sent multiple tweets expressing pride and happiness over Madison Keys and Sloane Stephens —
two Americans — reaching the finals of the US Open.
There are NO words to describe how proud and how happy I am for @Madison_Keys keys and @SloaneStephens for making the US open finals.

These amazing women continue to change the game and bring excellence, power, finesse and change to tennis.

What a joy it will be to watch this- hopefully first of many finals. Let's go ladies!

That’s a pretty magnanimous reaction from Williams, especially considering Stephens beat her sister, Venus, to advance to the finals. Also consider that there was a ton of tension between Stephens and Serena back in 2013 after Sloane defeated the veteran at the Australian Open. For Serena to be at this point now where she’s expressing positive thoughts and well wishes to both players is impressive. Even her “first of many finals” comment seems to have a hint of torch-passing to it.
