The MLB season is only a few weeks old, but Red Sox fans have to be tired of Bobby Valentine. The new Boston manager, who was hired to turn things around following last year’s September collapse, has led the team to a 4-10 start. He’s made some questionable choices with his pitching staff and got burned, and then he saw his team blow a 9-0 lead and lose 15-9 to the Yankees on Saturday.
What’s incredible is what Jimmy Traina pointed out over the weekend: The Red Sox have not won since Bobby Valentine questioned Kevin Youkilis on April 15. Yup, the Sox are 0-5 since then, and they’ve only been spared by an off day and rain out.
“I don’t think he’s as physically or emotionally into the game as he has been in the past for some reason,” Valentine said of Youkilis to create the controversy.
His remarks left team leader Dustin Pedroia confused.
“I really don’t know what Bobby is trying to do,” Pedroia said. “That’s not the way we go about our stuff around here. He’ll figure that out. The whole team is behind Youk. We have each other’s backs here. Maybe that works in Japan.”
It seemed like Valentine was trying to motivate Youkilis with his comments, but then the next day he apologized.
I didn’t think Valentine’s strategy made sense, but I reserved judgment until I saw how the team responded. I think their 0-5 record says enough.
