Luke Walton will reportedly meet with Kings

Luke Walton

In a 1992 campaign speech, former U.S. president George H.W. Bush famously said, “We are going to keep on trying to strengthen the American family, to make American families a lot more like the Waltons and a lot less like the Simpsons.” Well, if anything materializes out of this latest development, we just might have to reverse that order.

According to a report by Ailene Voisin of the Sacramento Bee on Tuesday, Warriors assistant coach Luke Walton is expected to meet with Kings general manager Vlade Divac next week to discuss the team’s head coaching vacancy.

The Kings are in the market for a new coach after firing George Karl last week. They have been ambitious in their search but high-profile candidates reportedly do not want to take on the job, meaning that Walton is probably the best it’s going to get for Sacramento.

Still, it doesn’t add up for Walton to ditch perhaps the best situation in the NBA with the Warriors, the greatest team in NBA regular season history and one that he led to a 39-4 start as interim coach, and move a couple hours north to Sacramento to inherit perhaps the worst one.

The 36-year-old Walton has been linked to the Knicks, the Suns, and the Lakers as well. He has also gone on the record and said that he won’t “rush” into another coaching gig.

You’ve gotta think that Walton will ride things out on the Golden State party bus for as long as he can. Meanwhile, the Kings’ job, perhaps the most unappealing one in the Association right now, is nowhere near enough to incentivize leaving that basketball paradise.
