Luke Walton, Mike D’Antoni reportedly among Suns coaching candidates
The Phoenix Suns are kicking their coaching search into high gear, and there’s a familiar candidate involved.
According to ESPN’s Marc Stein, multiple candidates are under consideration for the position, including current interim coach Earl Watson. Warriors assistant Luke Walton, former Suns player and current Grand Canyon coach Dan Majerle, and former Suns coach Mike D’Antoni are said to be in the picture as well.
Stein notes, however, that the Suns are considered a long shot to lure Walton away from his post at Golden State.
D’Antoni’s inclusion as a candidate is the most interesting. He left the Suns in 2008, apparently on good terms. They wanted to keep him at the time, but they didn’t stop him from departing when the Knicks came calling. Majerle’s name is also an interesting one. He’s obviously popular among Suns faithful, but Grand Canyon isn’t exactly a big job, although he did spend six years as a Suns assistant.
The Suns reportedly tried to lure a former star back as coach, but he wasn’t interested. They’ve also been linked to a prominent college coach in recent days.
