Known best for his 13-year playing career — spent most notably with the Lakers — Van Exel’s name has come up a few times this offseason. He was mentioned in conjunction with an Indiana Pacers job, but it sounds like he is headed to Memphis.
Van Exel spent this past season as head coach of the D-League’s Texas Legends. He was an All-Star as a guard for the Lakers in 1998 and averaged 15.7 points and 7.2 assists per game during his career. Prior to his time coaching the Legends, Van Exel also worked with the Milwaukee Bucks and Atlanta Hawks.
