Colin Cowherd claims to know at least one SEC football school that is paying players

Colin Cowherd

There has been a lot of talk in recent months about illegal recruiting and shady agent dealings in college basketball, but anyone who follows college sports knows that type of activity is rampant across the NCAA landscape. And if you believe Colin Cowherd, at least one SEC football school had better double-check to make sure it is properly covering its tracks.

While discussing the FBI’s probe into college basketball on his FSI show recently, Cowherd claimed he knows of at least one SEC football school that is “setting itself up for sanctions” by paying players.

“There is a program in the SEC right now that is playing right on the edge,” Cowherd said, as pointed out by The Spun. “It’s not Ole Miss bad, but it’s close. My sources tell me in the last year — it ain’t Ole Miss bad, but it’s getting there. Football, with paying players.”

Cowherd would not mention the specific team, and you can understand why. You’d have to be certain of your sources before putting a team in the same discussion as Ole Miss, as the Rebels were recently banned from postseason play for two years after an investigation determined the school was arranging for boosters to pay recruits “between $13,000 and $15,600 in cash payments, including $10,000 to one prospect.”

You may not trust Cowherd’s sources, and no one could blame you after some of the noteworthy misses he has had in the past. But would we be surprised to learn that Ole Miss wasn’t the only program paying players for commitments? I think we all know the answer to that.
