Notre Dame and USC announce major news about their rivalry game

The break in the Notre Dame-USC rivalry game will ultimately be short-lived.

Both schools announced Monday that their annual football rivalry will resume in 2030. The initial agreement provides for a four-game series running through 2033.

Notably, the agreement suggests Notre Dame gave in on a key bit of scheduling. The first two games will take place in Week 1, while the latter two will be played no later than Week 3. The game had previously been played after Thanksgiving, and the Fighting Irish had been reluctant to allow that to change.

The Trojans and Fighting Irish have played annually nearly uninterrupted since 1926, but that streak will be broken starting in 2026. The inability to find an agreement to continue the annual game drew backlash from fans of both schools, and it was perhaps not a coincidence that it emerged in May that the two sides had re-entered talks about restarting the game.

Ultimately, the Trojans and Fighting Irish will still go each of the next four years without playing unless they wind up meeting in a bowl game. By the time 2030 comes around, both sides should be very eager to renew hostilities.
