Paul Rhoads flipped out at his postgame press conference after his Iowa State Cyclones were screwed on a controversial call late in their 31-30 loss to Texas on Thursday night.
The play in question occurred with 1:15 left in the game and the Cyclones up 30-24. Texas running back Johnathan Gray lost a fumble on 1st and goal, and Iowa State began running the other way with the ball. But the referees determined that Gray was down by contact prior to the fumble, allowing Texas to maintain possession.
Texas ended up scoring on a 1-yard touchdown by Case McCoy and won 31-30.
Forget that Iowa State still had a minute to get in field goal range to win the game even after allowing the touchdown. Forget that they threw an interception to lose the game. Rhoads didn’t care about that. He only wanted to rage on the officials for the call. The Iowa State coach gave us a speech similar to Mike Gundy’s infamous blowup.
