Jon Beason says ‘coward move’ led to concussion
Carlos Hyde was fined $23,152 for initiating contact with Jon Beason using the crown of his helmet during last weekend’s game between the Giants and Niners, which resulted in a concussion for Beason. While it was Hyde who delivered the blow, the Giants linebacker is most upset with 49ers lineman Alex Boone.
Prior to the collision, Beason was pushed in the back by Boone after fighting off his block. This caused Beason to lose his balance. Before he was able to regain it, he was hit by Hyde. It’s obvious Beason feels the concussion wouldn’t have taken place had Boone not pulled the “coward move.”
“I can honestly say that if I hadn’t gotten pushed in the back I wouldn’t have been concussed,” Beason told Newsday on Friday. “It’s unfortunate when another player, Alex Boone to be exact, can reach out, grab you from behind, and deliberately push you in the back. It’s hard enough to stay healthy in this league. I think it was a coward move, it doesn’t show any sportsmanship, no regard for another player or his career. It could have been a lot worse.”
“I wanted to get that out there,” Beason said. “I hope that goes back to him, and that’s how I feel.”
The concussion was the first documented one of Beason’s NFL career, which began in 2007. He has passed all of the mandatory concussion tests, returned to practice on Friday, and is expected to play on Sunday against the Eagles.
As Beason noted, the result could have been much worse as injuries involving the head are always scary. While one documented concussion over a nine-year career doesn’t sound bad considering the punishment linebackers take on a weekly basis, the total should still be zero. And, Beason wants us to know Alex Boone had as much to do with his lone one as Carlos Hyde.
