It’s hard for me to buy that of all the players in the draft, there’s nobody they wouldn’t want at a mid-first round spot. Unless, as you say, they value someone more in free agency in which case we’d have to wait and see.

As far as I’m concerned, the jury is still out. The Patriots didn’t do it to be kind to a friend at their expense. We need to see how both free agent signings and the draft play out, and then it will probably become clearer to us.

They may have preferred the lower draft choice and the lower signing price if nobody in the first round tickled their fancy and they want cap room to go after a certain free agent or agents.

Is there anything stopping them from doing that? nope.
