Warren Moon: Cam Newton criticism has to do with race

Warren Moon does not feel as though Cam Newton is being treated with the respect he deserves. The Carolina Panthers are off to a disappointing 1-5 start this season, and Newton has not handled it well. The rough start hit its low point for Newton personally when he gave an overly dramatic postgame press conference after losing to the Cowboys last Sunday, during which he called a female reporter “sweetheart.”

While Moon, who served as an adviser to Newton last year, admits the criticism of Newton’s demeanor has been warranted, he believes race has played a role.

“I think a lot of this is because so many people want to say ‘I told you so’ about him, but couldn’t because he was so good last year,” Moon told Mike Silver of Yahoo! Sports. “I think people are overreacting. How can he be a bust? He just had one of the great years a rookie has ever had, and now he can’t play? Come on.

“I don’t understand it. I heard somebody compare him to Vince Young. It’s the same old crap – it’s always a comparison of one black to another black. I get tired of it. I get tired of defending it.”

Just because “somebody” compared him to Vince Young doesn’t mean it is an issue of race. But just in case, Moon offered up a white guy whom we should compare Newton to instead.

“If you want to compare him to someone because of his demeanor, compare him to Jay Cutler,” the Hall of Fame quarterback said. “There are a lot of guys who whine and moan. Cam’s not biting anybody’s head off or pushing his linemen. He’s just disgruntled, and not handling losing well, because, think about it, he basically didn’t lose in college.

“I don’t think Cam’s as bad as Cutler, because Cutler looks like he doesn’t give a damn sometimes, or he’s yelling and cussing at someone. Cam, he just looks down when they’re losing.”

That’s just it. Newton looks like an emotional trainwreck in some of his interviews and reportedly held up the Panthers team bus earlier this year because he was sulking over a loss. Either he’s putting on an act, or his emotional state is very fragile. Back in 2008, Young’s own mother told the public that her son was “hurting inside and out” and asked fans for support. Perhaps that is where the comparison that Moon heard stemmed from.

Jason Whitlock: “Information bubble” is hurting black quarterbacks

I’m not saying race is a complete non-factor in any and all criticism of Newton, because that’s simply not the way the world works. However, Moon has been playing this card since Newton’s character was attacked in Pro Football Weekly’s Draft Preview last year. Very few people are denying that Newton is tremendously talented. He has simply failed to carry himself like a leader this season.

UPDATE: Cam Newton has responded, and Moon has clarified his comments. Read what each have said.

Cam needs to talk to Joe Namoth, Namoth came in the league thinking he was so good he did not need anyone else like a line and blockers. He made sure the rest of the team knew this. The team said fine and let him do it on his own. The results being serious enjury and a shortened career. At least Namoth had the talent to shine even with minim help. Cam needs to quit crying and playing the race card, become a team player you are not the only one on the field. A good quarterback helps but it takes an orginazation to make a football team, teamwork!!! Teamwork!!! Teamwork!!!.

  • gavinwca

And rush was right, everyone eventually had to admit it.

  • David_Houston99

Warren Moon is a troll.  Every issue for him is a race issue.  Hey Warren, did you ever think that the race card you keep on pulling out has your name on it?  You use it so many times, that I think that the overrated former athlete that you are is the leader in dragging up race when there is ZERO call for it.  And you’re the expert because…you’re black?  Really?  You are not a tool in race relations, but you are a tool.  GO AWAY!

  • 1017

This has nothing to do with race, but everything to do with the fact that he acts like a selfish spoiled brat every time his team loses a game and looks to point fingers at everyone but himself.  Warren Moon should shut his face.

  • layupman54

So I guess what Warren Moon is saying that every time a black person criticizes a white player then it is based on racism as well.

  • BigRedFire

All of you have forgotten about Steve Young and Fran Tarkington.  Both HAll of Famers.  Both very mobile, known for their running as much as their passing.  Steve Young had a long healthy career – and he ran A-Lot.  Hey even Joe Montana could run to get the first down or sprint out.  Much better than the lead-foots of today.   A fast mobile quarterback ALWAYS gives you the advantage – whether it is today, or in the 70s, 80s or 90s.  Cam is immature and has been idol worshipped since he was a kid.  No one around him has given him reality.  Insttead they praise him.  If he ever gets his head on right , with a great tough coach – he will be great and in the Hall of Fame.  Otherwise, he IS Vince Young all over again.

  • BigRedFire

Hey, Joe Montana – (ever heard of him) – 4 super bowl wins!!  Ran his entire career.  John Elway ran early in his career.  (2 super bowl wins – 5 superbowls).  Steve Young (2 Super Bow Wins – 4 superbowls) had 4’4 speed.  Not only “in the pocket guys win Superbowls!.

  • smittytx

Warren Moon is off base with his racist remark. Any player who scores a TD from 2 yards out when they are down by 20 points (like Cam did a few weeks ago) then stands up and pretends he is Superman is a fool and extremely immature. He better learn to be humble and respect this game otherwise he will be on the outside looking in. This game will move forward with or without any one particular player…it is a machine. This kid has never faced really true adversity of the mind, body and spirit. Someone has always been there for him, guiding him through his over-confident immature days as a young player. Now he has to face reality and perform just like any other working person out there. Grow up young man.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000369794344 Stephen Smith

Moon has completely lost it, as well as a whole lot of respect a lot of fans like me who watched him used to have for him. Ya just never know-Cam is a bust, reguardless of his race.  This guy was so over hyped-given a great chance and has fallen on his butt! BTW, where is Jamarcus Russell now-days? Vince Young?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000369794344 Stephen Smith

I absolutely agree with you 100%!  This young man has the tallent and mind to be a great QB in the NFL.  Newton, on the other hand, does not have a clue.

  • justice641

Its not his race, its his character.   The Auburn travesty was his opportunity to look inward, he choose instead to do what every child does, lie.  He has nothing to build on, no integrity, the seeds have been sown, now the harvest.  He has a huge hill to climb, he must first confess, then build integrity, then ask for forgiveness.  Only then will he gain peace.

  • TimMcDonald

Kordell Stewart:  2001 Pro Bowl, Steelers MVP, and AFC Offensive Player of the Year, had 13-3 record, threw for over 3000 yards, and he beat the Ravens in the playoffs as the starting QB for the Steelers.    Now you remember.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/3OFPA2X466XNAMIN3SBHOBMHTU Roy

he had a hell of a canadian football career .This is the main reason he is in the hall . some may say that shouldn`t count like with flutie but flutie is white isn`t he?

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/3OFPA2X466XNAMIN3SBHOBMHTU Roy

4.4 hahaha lets not get crazy .How many option offense college QB`S were successful in the NFL post 1950`s

  • BigRedFire

Steve Young eas NOT an option quarterback,  Went to BYU and then they ran a version of the west coast offence.  But he was fast, check it out.

Contrary to popular opinion by you young guys – there was football before Brady and Manning.  BTW  – Steve Young was late 80s and 90s.

    Brady couldn’t ho;d Montana’s shoes.

He’s not a black azz, he’s just an azz.

  • Dave Small

Perhaps Warren Moon hasn’t been reading the fan blogs for teams with white quarterbacks.

I live in Houston and watched most every game that Warren Moon played for the Oilers. He was a great quarterback who enjoyed considerable fan support. Fans love an underdog, regardless of race. One thing they liked about Warren was the fact that the overcame not being drafted, played in Canada, and then showed his stuff in the NFL with great success. The fans really like Arian Foster partly for the same reason. Arian also overcame not being drafted to become a star in the league.

Quarterback is the most visible position on the field. Every mistake is magnified by TV announcers. White quarterbacks get just as much criticism as black QBs, and sometimes more. For example, I remember when David Carr was drafted number one overall, just like Newton. David had problems avoiding the pass rush (not all his fault) and the fans rode him mercilessly until he was replaced by Matt Schaub.  Last week, the Texans hung a big loss on the Baltimore Ravens. The Baltimore fan blogs were heartless in their criticism of Joe Flacco. This despite the fact that Baltimore has a winning record and admirable team stats on offense. They didn’t beat up on Joe Flacco because he’s white.

Race is an issue.  Warren Moon took up the slack last year when people critiqued Cam’s smile as arrogent. Suggesting it was fake, very disingenuous, and he would struggle to win a locker room because of it.  WTF  Amazingly, the critique is NEVER ABOUT HIS ABILITY.  Kurt Warner’s Bitch Ass was wrong and so are the others who want to critique him on everything but ability.

Warren Moon wisely brought up  Jay Cutler.  Who feels the need to put hands on teammates, even acts like a complete ass to them in public, yet Bitches out when it comes to the opposition.

I get it in your world Cam’s a horrible person, Brett Farve and his magic penis pictures make him a Saint, evern worse than Cam is Warren Moon who says some of this has to do with race.  Maybe just maybe people like Jason Whitlock should try the Jeff George comparison, because the Jay Cutler comparison doesn’t sway this group of readers.

  • http://www.facebook.com/dan.higgins.5 Dan Higgins

It has nothing to do with his skin color-.. it’s because Cam acts like a nigger….He’s dumb, selfish, and takes credit when others are due.

  • ThatBoy_Nolo

im pretty sure the racism he is referring to is why when there is a comparison its to the next black qb instead of an white qb they compare cam to jamarcus russell and mick vick but why not matt leinart and brady quinn or in this case cutler n cam its always cam and another black

  • ThatBoy_Nolo

@facebook-1169972578:disqus  u feeling really comfortable behind that safe little computer of yours huh talking like that

Thank you very much. remove all the race nonsense and your comment stands firm

Cam isnt playing the Race Card, Warren Moon put the Race Card out there and it was kind of wrong/right though!! If you look at what he’s saying is that ppl are trying to compare him to a washed up Vince Young, sorry Young never had the accuracy or arm strength to be a great QB in this league. Cam possess those skills and more he is much better than the media keep trying to spin him.. The media jumps all over him when they see something he does that isnt pretty to their eye.. Now they jumped on Cutler for pushing and cursing his lineman but the following week on Monday night football his Offensive Coordinator, Mike Tice, went to talk to him and he gets up and walk away as soon as Tice sat down, RUDE and DISRESPECTFUL, Steve Young amoung others said they liked it, Really.. you like such disrespect but then a young sophmore QB sits on the bench with his towel over his head in disappointment you wanna call him out thats BS and you know it.. Now Im not defending Cam he is immature, he needs to understand those days of total domination are good and gone!!

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/QKYDVEBUPTXIJCHXNBUD7X2EFA T.J.

    He feeling hella Comfortable!!! lol

  • gamarino

Leinart and Quin were never given automatic paths to the HOF B4 ever playing a game like Newton and Vick were, Newtons poor decisions, attitude and lack of leadership were called out by his own teammate S. Smith, who is also Black, Moon is way off base, quit making this a race issue.

  • Alshaun Dixon

There are several great pocket passers that never won a super bowl. Dan Marino, Jim Kelly, even Warren Moon, etc. However average qb’s like Phil Simms, Hostetler, Dilfer, Ken Johnson, Rypien etc all have rings. So  just standing there passing from the pocket doesnt mean you are going to win a super bowl and turn into a great player. I dont care what you say, the black quarterback is redifining the position. Most players and defensive coordinators interviewed say they fear the mobile quarterback the most, because when a play breaks down, he is always a threat to make something happen with his legs. No white mobile qB gets criticized the way the brothers are picked on. I dont remember Steve Young, Elway, Tarkenton, Staubach and others get trashed by the media for running. Hell Tebow mania swept the country last year and this dude cant throw a lick. So you can act like skin color is a non issue if you want to. But I know the real deal.

  • Alshaun Dixon

Most great atheletes are spoiled and have been told how good they are since theyve played youth and high school ball. Thats nothing new.  Cam is going to be great and prove all of you haters wrong.

  • Alshaun Dixon

Injuries are part of the game. Most of Vicks injuries have occured while he was standing in the pocket waiting for someone to get open while his O line is letting the defense come thru with clean shots . This happens everygame.  He is reluctant to run now, because the coaches and pressures from the media have convinced him to stand in the pocket and take a beating even though his line sucks. He is a little guy and it works to his advantage to use his God given skills to escape the pocket when necessary.

  • Alshaun Dixon

Thats a stupid comment.  Warren Moon is one of the greatest Qb’s of all time. Do your homework and look up his stats before you go popping off with such juvenile and racially hatred comments. Alot of great Qb’s dont have rings. Marino, Kelly, Takenton are all in the HOF with no rings. You are playin the race card. Moon is stating the facts.

  • Alshaun Dixon

Stop being in denial. Its all about race. People like you want to act like life is fair and everybody is on equal grounds. Bullshit! Until you have walked a mile in Warren Moons shoes, you will never know what it feels like to experience the institutional racism that he faced trying to break into the NFL and that still exist for the black quarterback today. I dont hear the dailey bashing of white qB’s like Rivers, Cassel, Palmer, Fitzpatrick, Weeden, Bradord, Kolb etc. ESPN, NFL Network and all of these so called experts on radio  are hammering Cam and Vick all day everyday. It just sickens me to my stomach. This happened to Mcnabb, Vince Young too.

  • Alshaun Dixon

Why dont you just STFU and crawl back into the hole that you came from. Warren Moon is a HOF and has the right to  defend the young black quarterback all he wants. Warren Moon had to knock down several stereotypes of the black quarterback just to get an oppurtunity to play in the NFL. He knows what he is talking about and is more qualified to speak on this subject than your dumb ass.

  • 88bomcelya69

The reason ALL QBs are made into pocket passers is because the owners want to protect their investments in these athletes. A running QB is far too often a QB on IR and he cannot earn his overpriced salary on IR. Look at RG3 just a couple of weeks ago when he took off running and came away lucky that he wasn’t hurt even worse but nonetheless he was on the sidelines at crunch time and not on the field earning his salary. How many times has Vick been hurt? TOO MANY!The skills are not “unique” they are hazardous to a QBs health and the position can’t be redefined, it’s still quarterback. As for the racism issue it’s no different than “white guys can’t jump” in basketball, just some idiot trying to bait others into making something out of nothing, and too often another idiot takes the bait and tries to run with it. Sports and society in general would be a far better place if people would ignore the Dukes and the Sharptons and now I guess the Moons of this world and give them a collective “SHUT THE F%@$ UP” when they try to spew their venom. As for Cam, I think with proper discipline he will be one of the greatest to ever play the game, as he has proven at all previous levels that he was up to the task.

  • 88bomcelya69

Tarkenton wasn’t running by choice, he was running for his life most times!

  • 88bomcelya69

    Italian sausage! (bologna)

  • 88bomcelya69

One old slow black QB won a super bowl and his name was Doug Williams………..oops my bad , he was a runner too, and a couple of years removed from his ring he was washed ( or too beaten) up to play. Tebow is not a QB just an athlete surviving so far playing out of position because no one has figured out where he should play

  • jayboyd27

ok so by what your saying dan marion shouldnt be in the hall of fame. he never won a superbowl or did really well in the playoffs. same with countless other people in the hall of fame . no matter what its a team gam,e and it takes a team to win in the post season and win a superbowl. there where many great players who had hall of fame careers but never played in a superbowl i disagree with what moon said but to say he doesnt belong in the hall of fame is just silly

korean qb’s r braver than the black 1’s

korean qb’s never get any chances, but then they grow up go in the real world and make more than the brothers

koreans build bridges all over the world @ africans call 4 the germans 2 build theirs  KOREANS AND GERMANS WOULD MAKE GREAT QB’S

  • ThatBoy_Nolo

its funny how u dont mention jay cutler who was lso given the same pass and shows the same attitude forget how good hes playing now with chicago he had the same chance in denver and his attitude changed that… also it funny how even b4 he entered the league he was getting compared to only black qbs  jus like how rg3 was before he played his first couple of games now hes completely different from the players yall were trying to compare him with.. everything is black and white until someones actually calls it out then its never about race… move along because all your goin to do is bring up isolated incidents to make a point to make your self right but you’ll never see th big picture

  • gamarino

You’re right about one thing, we could go back and forth bringing up isolated incidents for a year, but one point I made that you have no answer for and proves Moon is way off base is that S. Smith called Newton out for the very things he is being publically critisized for, and Smith is black… This is not a race issue, it is a performance issue, perhaps it is you who will never see the big picture as most other racists don’t.

  • ThatBoy_Nolo

the difference b/w smith and the others that criticize him is that 1. smith is a teammate.. and 2. he gave him constructive criticism without having to involve comparing other players to him black or white.. now if your going to criticize a player do what you have to do but when you have to criticize other players and compare to qbs that are only his skin color and leave out other players that do exactly what cam is doing but are white.. it easy to consider that race might very well b a factor. rather its blatant or not.. just saying

  • ThatBoy_Nolo

but if your calling me racist because i dont get the picture your trying to paint out then yeah i am racist because im for my ppl first and im tired of the world trying to sugar coat everything like there arnt sick things/people in this world and that our country isnt built upon all the sickening things they’ve done in the past.. but the difference b/w me and other racist u might b referring to is that i dont DISCRIMINATE at all, and i see it and give it how it comes

  • tyree1

    WHITE PEOPLE INVENTED THE COMPUTER

  • gamarino

I believe people are comparing Newton to guys like Vick is because he has the same weaknesses, poor decision making, not reading defences and poor leadership skills, it just so happens  those other guys are black too, guys like Jay Cutler and M. Sanchez are struggling for different reasons, IMO it’s not a race thing.

  • niasric

Had this debate once today already, where do you people come from. Know your facts before you start spouting off to somebody who obviously knows more about the sport than you do. Montana 1676 yards and 20 td’s rushing for his 16 year career. Do the math, better yet I’ll help you – average 104 yards (that’s not even 10 yards a game) and just over one td PER SEASON. Ran his entire career huh? Young, 17 yds per game and less than 3 td’s a year. Elway you say, 13 per game and 2 td’s a year. Fran Tarkenton only marginally better. Great HOF QB’s of course, great scramblers definitely, running QB’s??? not even close. They are in the record books for passing, they won superbowls because of passing. Huge difference between a runner and a scrambler. Oddly enough Young was on the “Herd” on ESPN this morning (I’m sure you can find the interview if you look). Asked about his “running” he made it clear in his entire collegiate and pro career a coach never called nor did he ever check into a running play for himself. He scrambled to get out of trouble, period. If you want to really talk running QB’s start with Randal Cunningham (ever heard of him?). Almost 2000 yards ahead of anybody else on the list and just lost first place this year to Vick. As much as I liked Cunningham he couldn’t make it the the dance. As far as Vick, only one full season played in his entire career, the rest shortened by injury. Want more? Kordell Stewart, Mcnabb, Mcnair, the list goes on, so yes only the “pocket guys” have won superbowls, thanks for playing.
