Rams DE William Hayes injures forearm smashing a mirror

William-Hayes-RamsSt. Louis Rams defensive end William Hayes picked a fight with a mirror after his team’s frustrating loss to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. He lost.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Hayes smashed a mirror with his forearm and suffered a pretty nasty cut. He received stitches to close the wound and practiced in full on Wednesday with a wrap on his arm.

“You know I’m passionate about the game, about my teammates,” Hayes explained. “I know every guy in this locker room was a little frustrated after the game. And I kind of let my feelings out, probably in a way I shouldn’t have. There’s a way to do things, and I probably took things a little too far. The mirror was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I kind of took it a little overboard. Emotions came out and got the best of me.”

He’s fortunate the injury wasn’t more severe. Hayes, who is in his sixth season with the Rams, admitted he has been frustrated because he knows he does not have a lot of time left in his career.

“I know at the end of the day, I’m not in my first or second year any more,” the 28-year-old said. “So I know that time is ticking. I don’t have too many more chances to try to get where I want to get to. My rookie year (in Tennessee), we made it to the playoffs and I’ve been trying my best to get there ever since.”

The Rams are just 2-5 this season and have lost three straight games. You can understand why Hayes is irritated, but he should learn from athletes who have injured themselves badly before him. As this NBA player or this MLB star can tell us, fighting inanimate objects is usually a lousy idea. Not to mention, smashing mirrors is bad luck.
