Jimmy Connors implies he got Chris Evert pregnant and she had an abortion

Jimmy-Connors-Chris-EvertJimmy Connors and Chris Evert were one of the most popular couples in sports in the 1970s. The two tennis stars were at the top of the food chain in their sport, which in many ways made them the ideal power couple. Connors and Evert were engaged to be married in 1974, but they split just weeks before their scheduled wedding date. The reason why may surprise you.

In his new memoir, “The Outsider,” Connors implied that he and Evert called off their wedding because of a complication that arose in their relationship when Evert became pregnant.

“An issue had arisen as a result of youthful passion, and a decision had to be made as a couple,” Connors wrote in the book, via the NY Post. “Chrissie called to say she was coming out to LA to take care of the ‘issue.’ I was perfectly happy to let nature take its course and accept responsibility for what was to come.”

Connors was 22 at the time and Evert was 19. Having come from a strict Catholic home, Evert reportedly felt that the timing of the pregnancy was bad and that she had no other choice. Connors said she asked him to handle the “details” and had already made up her mind.

“Well, thanks for letting me know,” he said he told her. “Since I don’t have any say in the matter, then I guess I am just here to help.”

Connors said he later told Evert that it would be best if they “take a step back” in their relationship, which did not sit well with her and ultimately led to the split. He said they fought hard to work out their issues but that it became difficult because of their rising status as sports stars.

“Can two No. 1’s exist in the same family?” he wrote.

It seems to be working out fine for Jay-Z and Beyonce.

Even in tennis it can, and has, worked. Steffi Graf and Andre Agassi are #1’s who seem to have a successful marriage.

WOW…something so private for so long should have stayed PRIVATE..it seems as if someone just can’t let go…..once again….he shows his anger in public with no thought of the impact it could create….NO ONE IS PERFECT and EVERYONE has something in their life that the WORLD need not pass judgment on.

Andre was not a #1 when he was with Steffi. Good try though.

Anger? Nah. He’s just trying to hawk up some cash. You don’t like it, don’t buy the book. I know I won’t.

Evert was such a “good Catholic” she had no problems with aborting her unborn child. Jimmy did OK, though and he’s been married to Patti for over 30 years. Meanwhile, Evert has had a string of divorces. She must be pretty high maintenance.

  • prolife4ever

And the moral of the story is that abortion solves nobodys problems ever.

  • Gene

Agassi might not have been #1, but he was arguably more popular than ever before and was stilol a factor at the majors. The reason they have been successful is not for the #1 technicality, but because they got together when they were older and more mature. Connors and Evert were very young and immature.

  • Bobby Clemente

That had to be very disheartening for Connors whom I believe was in love w/ Chrissy. She should’ve had the kid, would’ve had her soul mate (maybe, lol, they were awfully young!) and certainly young enough to become the best player in the game.

  • Bobby Clemente

Right on….that’s probably eaten away at her since then. Plus a woman’s body always has a reaction to those.

  • Harlz

Wow! Fred with an extra capital in his last name, stop being so angry. They were #1 at one time, I believe that was his point. Seriously, relax.

Now that’s bigger news then coming out that you are gay…

too bad- that clump of cells could have gone on to be a great tennis player.

Business decision should not mix with romance decision. You can still get married and be the number one. If not, what’s to regret? They never meant to be together if they took the easy way out of it.

I have no respect for Jimmy for revealing this. This was a very personal matter between the two of them and I think it should have stayed that way. I also can’t believe the harsh judgement from some of the people for Chris.

  • Sam

What kind of idiot writing is this? “Having come from a strict Catholic home, Evert reportedly felt that the timing of the pregnancy was bad and that she had no other choice.” A non sequitur if ever there was one. In a “strict Catholic home,” abortion would never be an option. If the allegation is true, and if Connors was serious about “accepting responsibility,” he would not have taken care of the “details.” And certainly there is no legitimate reason to be publicizing this now.

I don’t believe Evert herself ever claimed to have the same strict beliefs as her parents. Where does she claim to be a “good Catholic?” My parents were Christian but I’m an atheist, so when I was young I hid a lot of things from them knowing they would disapprove.

The harsh judgment is not fair. But, Connors has just as much right to talk about this as Evert does to not want to talk about it. This was part of his life, too, not just hers.

Looks like this has bothered Connors for a long time, and he just kept it bottled up.
