Russian team wants to sign Alex Ovechkin

Alex Ovechkin is coming off the worst season in his 7-year NHL career, but that’s not stopping a Russian team from pursuing him in case of an NHL lockout.

KHL defending champion Dynamo intends to try and sign the Capitals star.

“We will talk with Ovechkin. It will be up to the head coach,” Dynamo GM Andrey Safronov said on Saturday, according to Ria Novosti.

The CBA between NHL players and owners will expire next month, and a lockout appears imminent.

Ovechkin is a Mascow native and played four seasons with Dynamo before coming to the NHL. The option of returning to Russia could be appealing for him.

During the last lockout, 78 NHL players went to play in Russia. We’ll see how many leave this time.
