John Sterling’s apartment burned in massive New Jersey fire
Longtime voice of the Yankees John Sterling was one of the victims whose apartment was burned during a massive fire at a luxury apartment complex in New Jersey Wednesday evening, the New York Daily News reports.
The massive fire first broke around 4:20 pm and it remained out of control as of four hours later. The fire likely left all residents of the Avalon at Edgewater complex homeless for the time being, including Sterling, who has taken up at a hotel in the meantime.
“I was wondering what I was going to do for clothes. But then I started thinking about all the stuff, all the memories, whether it be music, books, and a lot of other stuff,” he told the Daily News. “You know I was planning on moving to a new apartment complex and felt I was going to throw a lot of that stuff out. Now I hope I haven’t lost it.”
Sterling, who has been broadcasting Yankees games on the radio since 1989, fears that he has lost all his belongings and notes that the only clothes he’ll have to wear for a job this weekend are the ones he was currently wearing.
The only good news is that it appears that all residents escaped unharmed. A nearby school and Boys and Girls Club were opened for the residents to stay temporarily.
The same complex also experienced a fire during its construction in 2000.
