Switzerland has won 186 medals at the Summer Olympics all-time, 48 of them coming in gymnastics — the most of any sport by far. Yet until Sunday, none had ever been won by a female.
Giulia Steingruber became the first Swiss female to win a medal at the Olympics in gymnastics in the country’s history when she won bronze in the vault.
Americans watching the event on Sunday at the Rio Games were likely tuning in to watch Simone Biles capture yet another gold, but Steingruber’s achievement was also a cool story.
