Rory McIlroy reportedly broke up with Caroline Wozniacki over the phone

Rory McIlroy Caroline WozniackiRory McIlroy made an abrupt decision to end his relationship with Caroline Wozniacki last week. He has implied that the calling off of their engagement was mutual, but it sure doesn’t seem that way. In fact, one report claims Wozniacki thought McIlroy was joking when he told her he wanted to end things.

According to Neil Harman of The Times in London, Wozniacki was still searching for answers about the sudden breakup after her loss at the French Open.

“The last time he called, less than a day after telling her how much he loved her, it was a three-minute conversation she thought was a joke,” Harman wrote, according to For the Win.

If that was indeed the last time McIlroy called Wozniacki, that would imply that the 25-year-old golfer broke up with his fiancee over the phone. Christopher Clarey of The New York Times heard a similar story.

McIlroy’s decision to dump Wozniacki came just a few days after their wedding invitations were sent out. I suppose that’s better than leaving her at the alter, but you would think he could wait until they got together to have “the talk” in person.

It probably stings Wozniacki even more that McIlroy went on to win a tournament just days after breaking up with her.

Rory McIlroy reportedly felt Caroline Wozniacki was hurting his golf game

Rory McIlroy Caroline WozniackiRory McIlroy has been criticized over the past year or so for not spending enough time working on his golf game. The 25-year-old Northern Irishman has fallen off a bit since he burst onto the scene by winning the US Open in 2011 and the PGA Championship the next year.

Was Caroline Wozniacki part of the problem?

McIlroy announced on Wednesday that he has called off his engagement with Wozniacki just days after their wedding invitations were sent out. According to the New York Post’s Page Six, Rory felt that his personal life was affecting his golf game.

“Rory’s game hasn’t been as consistently good in the time he’s been with Caroline,” a source reportedly said. “He was a young guy in love and was flying around the world to see her play in tournaments or meet up with her. He was missing practice rounds. It was a distraction.”

Back in July, golf legend Nick Faldo accused McIlroy of not spending enough time on the course and worrying too much about his personal life. McIlroy later fired back and reminded his critics how difficult the game of golf can be. Gary Player made similar remarks when he said McIlroy needs to find the right woman.

Perhaps Wozniacki was losing focus, too.

“When you have two players focused on being No. 1, it’s a huge commitment to see each other, physically and emotionally,” the Post’s source added. “As tough as the decision to end the relationship might have been, it is wise to do it now rather than after they were married.”

I still think the love life excuse was overplayed, but you never know. We’ll see how McIlroy plays the rest of the way in 2014.

Serena Williams supports Caroline Wozniacki amid breakup

Caroline Wozniacki tweeted on Thursday for the first time since news of her breakup with Rory McIlroy was announced. The two professional athletes were together for over two years and recently sent out wedding invitations, which resulted in McIlroy developing cold feet.

Wozniacki tweeted to address the split and made reference to Liverpool’s anthem, “You’ll never walk alone.”

She received this tweet of support from Serena Williams in return:

Pretty sweet gesture from Williams, who is supposed to be one of Woz’s rivals on tour.

Caro also updated her Twitter bio to remove “fiancee” from her list of descriptions, though she still is a mother to her and Rory’s dog, Bruno.

I really feel badly for both of them. Breakups are already bad enough, and it’s even worse when you were planning a wedding and split. They both probably feel humiliated and embarrassed over the matter. We definitely feel for them.

Rory McIlroy breaks up with Caroline Wozniacki, calls off engagement

Rory McIlroy Caroline WozniackiRory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki are not getting married, after all. In a shocking turn of events, McIlroy announced on Wednesday morning that he has called off the wedding and is ending his relationship with the tennis star. This time, word of the breakup came straight from the horse’s mouth.

“The problem is mine. The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realize that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails,” McIlroy said in a statement, via the NY Daily News. “I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we’ve had. I will not be saying anything more about our relationship in any setting.”

Wozniacki and McIlroy sent out their invitations just days ago, and the two-time major champion poked fun at a report last week that got the couple’s wedding date incorrect. McIlroy spoke a bit more about his personal life a few hours after making the announcement.

“It is quite a difficult time for Caroline and myself, and the statement really said it all this morning,” he added. “It was mutual and we both thought it was the best for us, the best for both of us. Time to move on, and I’ve said all that I need to say.

“Look, I’m no different than anyone else. Everyone has been through breakups, and it’s obviously very, very difficult. But look, I’m here to try and concentrate on this week and answer questions about golf, and that’s what I’m going to do.”

Wozniacki and McIlroy had grown used to false rumors about their relationship ending, and they seemed to laugh it off every time. He said earlier this year that Wozniacki is the “right girl for me,” despite analysts and former golfers constantly blaming his dating life for his struggles.

We certainly didn’t see this coming.

Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki wedding date is not in August, contrary to report

Rory McIlroy Caroline WozniackiNow that the Irish Independent can no longer sporadically report that Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki have ended their relationship, the publication has turned its attention toward trying to predict when the couple will tie the knot.

On Wednesday, the Independent cited “exclusive” sources who claim McIlroy and Wozniacki are getting married in late August.

“Rory is marrying Caroline in late August,” the insider explained. “They’ve only been engaged a few months, but they’re both keen to make it official and are a planning a spectacular day for guests. They’re keeping their invite list under wraps for now for security reasons because it includes some A-list superstars from around the world.”

Here’s what McIlroy had to say about the “inside” information.

McIlroy is 25 and Wozniacki is 23. They are both currently in the primes of their careers and don’t really need to rush to get married, though Wozniacki did previously state that she would like to be a young mother. Still, don’t count on an August wedding. The Independent doesn’t exactly have a good track record when it comes to its favorite power couple.

Caroline Wozniacki, in pink hair, sinks long putt at Masters (Video)

Caroline Wozniacki caddied for fiancee Rory McIlroy at the Masters par 3 contest Wednesday, and she actually made a nice putt on the ninth hole.

Woz got some help from Rory on lining it up, and she hit the ball softly and it ended up going in. The two celebrated the great shot, and Wozniacki then proudly tweeted about her accomplishment.

Oh, and did we mention that Caro’s hair was dyed a shade of pink or red:

What color is that, Caro? A little Manic Panic Red Passion? Or perhaps the Pretty Flamingo?

Nice shot by her for sure!

Rory McIlroy: Caroline Wozniacki is the ‘right girl for me’

Rory McIlroy Caroline WozniackiRory McIlroy has been heavily scrutinized for his relationship with tennis player Caroline Wozniacki, but he is confident he has made the right choice for a life partner.

Speaking prior to the Abu Dhabi Championship this week, McIlroy discussed his engagement to Wozniacki. He got her an 8-carat ring because eight is his lucky number. He also thinks the engagement will help him.

“I feel I have stability in my life now and the engagement will only help with regards to knowing everything in my life is set. I mean, if you get engaged, you plan to spend the rest of your life with that person, so it is a big decision. But she’s definitely the right girl for me,” McIlroy said via The Telegraph.

McIlroy proposed to Wozniacki on New Year’s while the two were in Sydney by the Sydney Harbour bridge.

Not only does McIlroy have stability in his personal life, but he also has many legal matters sorted out. He had his split with his sponsors and management that turned into legal issues. The equipment issues following his departure from Oakley to Nike was sorted out, but he still has to settle with Horizon, his former management company.

Still, now that he’s been with the swoosh for several months, McIlroy appears to be back on track. He finished tied for sixth at the WGC-HSBC Champions in November, 11th at Tiger Woods’ Northwestern Mutual World Challenge, and he won the Australian Open in December. Based on his comments and the way he’s played, we’re expecting a great year from McIlroy.
