Caroline Wozniacki once again denies she and Rory McIlroy have broken up

rory-mcilroy-caroline-wozniackiOver the weekend, the Irish Independent reported once again that Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki have broken up. And once again, we have a firm denial.

Like last time, “sources” supposedly told the Independent that Wozniacki is distraught over McIlroy ending their relationship. But get this — the latest rumors indicated the final straw for McIlroy was that photo Woz posted of him last month on Twitter that showed him in a deep sleep with his mouth wide open.

“Yes they are over,” a source reportedly told the Independent. “It’s a difficult time for them both but it is for the best in the long run.”

Serena Williams was even said to have weighed in on the gossip.

“Rory was very upset by (the picture) and even Serena Williams pointed out – albeit in a joking way – it was a pretty mean thing to do,” the source said. “There were a lot of tears. She still has her profile picture on her social networking site set as the two of them in happier times, but I can tell you the pair are no longer an item.”

On Monday, Wozniacki told Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet that we have another baseless rumor on our hands. Translation via For the Win:

Rory McIlroy says he and Caroline Wozniacki have not broken up

Rory McIlroy Caroline WozniackiRory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki are in the news again because of rumors that they have broken up, but the two are in denial mode.

Irish outlets The Sun and The Independent reported over the weekend that the golfer and tennis player have split. The Independent says McIlroy ended the relationship, leaving Woz “utterly distraught.” They reported that the break up has been “very difficult” for the two.

Speculation of problems between the two arose after they each changed their Twitter profile pictures from ones of them together to ones of them alone. Wozniacki made light of that detail in a tweet:

Likewise, McIlroy denied there was anything wrong between him and Wozniacki.

“Just because we changed our Twitter profile picture doesn’t mean we’re not together. But yeah, it’s all good,” McIlroy told the media.

The Northern Irishman then mocked the reporter who wrote about their breakup, and Woz joined in over Twitter:

Andy Roddick, Brooklyn Decker defend Rory McIlroy, Caroline Wozniacki

rory-mcilroy-caroline-wozniackiRory McIlroy has been under a lot of criticism as of late because of his abysmal play in 2013, and his girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki has been blamed for much of it. McIlroy could just be going through an inexplicable funk, but several PGA legends and analysts have wondered if his relationship with Wozniacki is directly correlated with his struggles.

The most recent comments about McIlroy’s personal life came from nine-time major champion Gary Player, who said that McIlroy needs to find the right woman in order to continue his dominance in the game of golf. After hearing that chatter, former tennis star Andy Roddick and his wife Brooklyn Decker have apparently had enough.

As one of the more prominent athlete-celebrity couples on our extensive list, Roddick and Decker know a thing or two about relationship criticism. I’m sure Roddick heard how Decker negatively affected his play on more than one occasion.

For what it’s worth, Wozniacki has struggled worse than McIlroy since the two started dating. She was ranked No. 1 in the world at the time, but has fallen to 10th and hasn’t won a major since. McIlroy, on the other hand, was No. 3 in the world then and is No. 3 now. His only two major victories came while he was dating Wozniacki.

Everyone from Johnny Miller to Nick Faldo seems to think McIlroy is not responsible enough to know how to handle his personal time. Fortunately, golf is not a team sport. If McIlroy wants to spend more time on his girlfriend and less on golf (not to say he’s even doing that), that’s his prerogative. Talking about it obviously isn’t changing anything.

Caroline Wozniacki, Rory McIlroy spend time together amid breakup report

Rory McIlroy Caroline Wozniacki

Like many other celebrity couples, Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki frequently face breakup rumors. The rumors have been around twice now, and the latest came from unreliable British tabloid The Sun.

Over the weekend, The Sun said McIlroy was growing tired of Wozniacki being so clingy.

“He is trying to find a way out of the relationship. It looks as if it’s almost over,” a source told the paper.

In March, the Independent speculated that the relationship could be going south because both players were struggling and because they hadn’t recently communicated over Twitter. Seriously. That’s what they were basing it on.

We haven’t bought either rumor, and it looks like with good reason. The two are still together and their relationship appears to be doing well.

Wozniacki and McIlroy both lost early in their tournaments. Wozniacki lost in the second round at Wimbledon, and McIlroy failed to make the cut at the Irish Open. McIlroy even said in the past that just because both play poorly at the same time has nothing to do with their relationship.

After crashing out of their events early, Wozniacki and McIlroy retreated to Woz’s home in Monaco for the weekend:

Caroline Wozniacki caddying for Rory McIlroy at Masters Par 3 Contest

Caroline Wozniacki Rory McIlroy caddie

Rory McIlroy’s caddie for the Par 3 Contest at the Masters Wednesday was richer, more athletic, more famous, and probably more attractive than anyone else’s. Yes, McIlroy had his girlfriend, tennis player Caroline Wozniacki, caddie for him at the Par 3 Contest.

“I had a good deal with Rory and get a really good pay check out of this,” Wozniacki joked to ESPN’s Tom Rinaldi. “I even gave him a special price.”

“It’s very special,” McIlroy said of having his girlfriend caddie for him. “Caroline had the opportunity to come [last year] but it didn’t quite work out in the end. I wanted her to come to Augusta and come to the Masters to see what it’s all about. It’s great that she’s here this week. It makes this afternoon special that she can be out here with me.”

Wozniacki drew comparisons between the Masters and Wimbledon, which is recognized as tennis’ most prestigious tournament.

“Obviously this is a very special tournament,” she said. “It has so many traditions. In many ways it’s similar to Wimbledon, but in many ways it’s also different.

“Hopefully he won’t give me too many looks for wrong clubs,” Wozniacki joked.

Funny to think that only a month ago people were wondering if the two were having relationship problems all because they hadn’t tweeted each other in a while. That all looks silly now. If there are any appearances of a rocky relationship, it’s probably because McIlroy and Wozniacki are both professional athletes who are constantly traveling and have little free time. They seem to be doing quite well to us. Of course, we liked it more when McIlroy’s ex-girlfriend Holly Sweeney caddied for him, but we’ll settle for Caroline.

Wozniacki later tweeted about the experience.

With Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki both struggling in their respective sports as of late, speculation began building a couple weeks ago that the couple is going through a rough patch in their relationship. McIlroy put those rumors to rest before the WGC-Cadillac Championship, and it appeared the couple was back to being their corny selves earlier this week.

On Tuesday night, McIlroy and Wozniacki attended the player’s party before the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami. As you can see from the photo above that she posted on Twitter, Woz decided to dress as her better half for the event. The wig she wore made the couple look eerily similar.

How perfect. Wozniacki loves breaking out impersonations of people (see: Williams, Serena) and Wozilroy is all about posing for corny pictures together. What better way to reassure the world that their relationship is just rosie than to dress exactly alike and make themselves look like brother and sister? Thank goodness all is well.

Rory McIlroy says everything is fine between him and Caroline Wozniacki

Rory McIlroy has yet to hit his stride this season, which has left us all searching for explanations for his sub-par play. What could be wrong with the 23-year-old? The most logical answer would be that he is having trouble adjusting to his new Nike clubs and equipment, but not everyone is a logical thinker.

Considering we live in an era that is driven by gossip, many people have been quick to assume that McIlroy is having issues in his personal life. More specifically, there have been rumors that he and girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki are on the rocks.

McIlroy put the speculation of romantic problems to rest at a press conference ahead of the WGC-Cadillac Championship this week.

“I know I’ve read what’s been written,” McIlroy said, via USA Today Sports. “And like just because I have a bad day on the golf course and Caroline loses a match in Malaysia, it doesn’t mean that we’re breaking up. It’s sport, and look, I’d rather keep my private life as private as possible. Everything on that front is great and I’m looking forward to seeing her next week when she gets to Miami.”

Of course, the rumors about McIlroy and Wozniacki having relationship problems were completely baseless. In its gossip report, The Independent cited reasons such as Wozniacki and McIlroy both playing poorly. The site also pointed to the fact that the duo has not tweeted at each other much lately.

Seriously? This is what we have come to? If the world has gotten to a point where we can automatically speculate that two people have broken up because they have not tweeted at each other, we’re in trouble. Even if you don’t believe that McIlroy withdrew from the Honda Classic because of tooth pain, that doesn’t necessarily mean he is having problems at home. When the world’s top golfer switches tools, there might be an adjustment period. That certainly seems more likely than poor play as a result of fighting with your girlfriend.
