NFL team reportedly wanted David Beckham to try out as kicker

David-Beckham-LA-hockey-townDavid Beckham, NFL kicker? The idea may sound crazy to some, but apparently there was a scout from an NFL team who thought it might be a good idea.

According to The Daily Mirror, Beckham was recently contacted by an NFL scout as he contemplated his future with the LA Galaxy. The soccer star announced his retirement from the Galaxy last month, which opened the window for an NFL team to offer him a tryout as a placekicker.

Beckham is planning to continue helping the growth of American soccer after he retires, but it would stand to reason that he could help the NFL as well. While some players absolutely despise the idea, the NFL has been contemplating moving a full-time franchise to London. Two NFL games are already played overseas each year, so it would stand to reason that Beckham could help market American football even further in his home country.

The Mirror’s source reportedly speculated that Beckham’s shot-shaping expertise could translate well to kicking field goals.

“A couple of scouts felt that David has the potential to become a kicker in the NFL team, and one actually put a call into him for a trial,” the source said. “It is no secret that David is one of the best in the business when it comes to accuracy and length in his passing. And he has stood on the greatest stages to perform magnificent feats with his feet.

“Major league kickers can send the ball 40 yards straight – David has shown for the last 15 years he can do that week in week out.”

The source also talked about how much money Beckham could generate in international marketing and PR, which is likely what any NFL team that was interested in him would be looking for. Unfortunately, the 38-year-old declined the offer. I’d personally love to see what he can do.

David Beckham kicks ball at opponent Sam Cronin, gets yellow card (Video)

David Beckham received a yellow card at the end of the Galaxy’s 4-3 loss to San Jose on Saturday after kicking a ball at one of his opponents.

Quakes midfielder Sam Cronin was down on the ground after getting tangled with a Galaxy player on a corner kick in the 91st minute. Beckham may have been frustrated that his team was losing, or he felt like Cronin was faking, so he decided to kick a ball at the fallen midfielder.

Cronin got up in a fury after being kicked with the ball and a scuffle between the teams ensued. Beckham received a yellow card for his actions and will be suspended for the Galaxy’s next game.

Beckham is no stranger to controversy in his MLS games; he actually was more tame this time compared to what happened last year.

David Beckham takes a shot at the Canadiens before game in Montreal (Video)

With the L.A. Galaxy in Montreal this weekend to take on the Impact, it was only natural that a reporter ask the Galaxy’s biggest star something about hockey. As we all know, soccer is not the most popular sport north of the border. When David Beckham was asked what it was like to travel to a hockey town for a soccer match, he had a brilliantly witty answer waiting in the holster. As you can see from the video above, Beckham took a shot at the Canadiens while paying a compliment to the Kings, who have shocked the hockey world by advancing to the semifinals of the Stanley Cup playoffs as a No. 8 seed.

“I think we’re the hockey town at the moment,” Beckham said with a grin before adding that he doesn’t want to offend anyone.

As we know, the Canadiens missed the playoffs altogether this year after a disappointing season. Beckham’s comment was very well-timed and light-hearted, but I’m sure the joke didn’t earn him any fans in the Montreal area. Moments like this one would seem to indicate that those people take their hockey fairly seriously.

David Beckham will be first male to appear solo on cover of ‘Elle Magazine’

Once again, David Beckham is set to make history. He won’t be doing so by becoming the first soccer player to ink a second $250 million deal with an MLS team, however. This time, Beckham is making magazine history. According to the Daily Mail, Beckham is set to become the first ever male to appear by himself on the cover of Elle Magazine.

For those who are unfamiliar with the publication, Elle is a women’s magazine based in the United Kingdom that focuses on women’s fashion, beauty, health, and entertainment. Men have appeared on the cover on rare occasions when accompanied by a female, but never has a man gone solo on the cover of Elle. Since the magazine caters to a female audience and females love looking at Becks, it makes sense that he would be the first.

Unlike the picture of Beckham that caused a controversy when it was distributed to thousands of schools and community centers across the U.K., he’s probably free to show as much as he wants on the cover of Elle. I doubt the magazine’s regular readers will complain.

David Beckham’s tattoo of Posh Spice causes school-poster controversy

David Beckham‘s provocative tattoo of his wife Victoria has created a stir in the UK after the ink was seen in promotional posters by supermarket chain Sainsbury’s reportedly sent to 47,000 schools and community centers across the country.

The tattoo in question, which features a scantily clad Posh Spice posing seductively on Beckham’s left forearm, is displayed in ads featuring the L.A. Galaxy midfielder encouraging preschool-age kids to adopt an active lifestyle.

“I can see it’s not really appropriate to have on show in front of children,” one teacher told The Sun.

“We are going to keep the material in the preschool but make sure it’s too high up for the children to see.”

At least she’s not being wasteful. Sainsbury’s has apologized for its lapse in judgement and said it will “take this feedback on board when designing our Active Kids material going forward.” Translation: Long-sleeve shirts.

Meanwhile, Sarah Jones doesn’t see what the big deal is.

David Beckham to Please the Ladies with Underwear Ad During Super Bowl

Those of you who are Giants, Patriots, Ravens, or Niners fans could end up focusing on one thing and one thing only come Sunday, Feb. 5. The rest of us will be enjoying the best day of the year and — per usual — the best commercials of the calendar year. Good news for the portion of the population that has always wanted to see David Beckham in his underwear during the big game: you’ll get your wish during the second quarter this year.

According to the Mirror, the H&M clothing company has put up an estimated $1 million to have Beckham appear in a 30-second commercial wearing nothing but his skivvies. Of course, Beckham will be showcasing H&M’s “David Beckham Bodywear” collection.

“Over the past year, I’ve been developing my Bodywear range with my team and I’m extremely positive about what we have designed and produced,” Beckham said. “The final piece in the jigsaw was a retail partner who has the vision and capability to distribute these products globally. In H&M we have found the perfect partner to collaborate with going forward.”

As the Mirror pointed out, the largest audience Beckham was ever seen by came during the 2002 World Cup, when roughly 1.6 billion people watched a match between England and Brazil. To my knowledge, Beckham was not alone and in his underwear during that broadcast. An estimated two billion people will see him in that state during the Super Bowl. If anyone has the confidence to pull it off, it’s Becks.

David Beckham Gets in Opposing Coach’s Face After Galaxy Win (Video)

David Beckham got into it with the Real Salt Lake coach following the Galaxy’s 2-1 win on Saturday. According to The Salt Lake Tribune, Becks was upset that Real coach Jason Kreis had yelled at the referee. The ref handed out six yellow cards, four of which went against Salt Lake.

“Apparently [Beckham] thinks he’s the only one who can yell at referees,” Kreis said. “He wanted to continue [the discussion] after the game.”

Here is a video of the incident:

I honestly didn’t know Beckham had that in him. That’s not something I expected to see from the Easter bunny.

Chest bump to Sports Grid for the story.
