Aaron Hicks will not need Tommy John surgery

The New York Yankees have evaded the worst-case scenario with Aaron Hicks.

An MRI on the 29-year-old outfielder’s throwing elbow revealed a right flexor strain, manager Aaron Boone said on Sunday.

“The fact that the ligament is intact is good news,” said Boone, per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. “He’ll be shut down for the next seven to 10 days from throwing, and then at that point, hopefully he’s in a position to start ramping back up again.”

Boone also said that Tommy John surgery would not be necessary for Hicks.

“I think we were all kind of worried that it could be that,” he added. “That’s ruled out. Now it’s just making sure it’s healed and recovered.”

Hicks, who is hitting .235 with 12 home runs this season, hurt his elbow on a throw to third base from his usual center field spot over the weekend.

While the siuation has exacerbated some internal drama for the Yankees, they can at least breathe a sigh of relief that Hicks’ injury wasn’t any worse.
