Alex Rodriguez offered the dumbest strategy advice on ‘Sunday Night Baseball’

Alex Rodriguez

Alex Rodriguez offered quite possibly the dumbest analysis about baseball strategy that we have ever heard.

During “Sunday Night Baseball” between the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets, A-Rod explained why he liked the idea of the Phillies trying to sacrifice bunt a runner to third from second with nobody out in a 2-1 game in the seventh. According to A-Rod, it’s all about aiming for even leads instead of odd leads.

“You always want even leads versus odd leads. Why? The solo home run doesn’t tie it, and the grand slam does not beat you,” Rodriguez said.

Excuse me, A-Rod, but that might be the dumbest strategy advice I’ve ever heard.

The goal in baseball, as in most sports, is to score more times than your opponent. You achieve that goal by scoring as many runs as possible and limiting your opponent to as few runs as possible.

Think about how stupid that advice is. You know what’s better than a two-run lead, Alex? Being up by three runs. Or five, or seven, or nine, or 11. Those are all odd numbers.

Even, odd, what difference does it make? Just try to score as many runs as you can and limit your opponent to as few runs as possible — that’s the strategy all teams should be aiming for. To try and break it down into even versus odd is stupid.

This has to be the worst baseball strategy from a former player since Steve Lyons’ brainbusters.

A-Rod, this video is for you:
