Mac Jones may be parlaying his strong 2025 season into an opportunity for a starting gig elsewhere.
The San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jones is “definitely on the radar” of the Minnesota Vikings for a potential offseason trade, Vikings writer Jason Harmon reported on Thursday. Harmon notes that Minnesota is still confident in their starting QB JJ McCarthy but that injuries remain a concern for him.
Jones, the 27-year-old former first-round pick, found new life this season with the 49ers. He was able to draw eight total starts in the regular season with Brock Purdy battling various health issues and went a very respectable 5-3 as San Francisco’s starter.
The ex-Pro Bowler Jones threw for a total of 2,151 yards and 13 touchdowns to six interceptions. He also gained a lot of respect from 49ers fans for some gritty performances down the stretch of the season.
As for the Vikings, their quarterback position was largely a disaster in 2025. McCarthy only played in 10 total games for them due to injuries, and backup QBs Carson Wentz and Max Brosmer were pretty nightmarish during their time in relief as well.
Jones is under contract next season at a total cap hit of $3.98 million. He even impressed Tom Brady over the course of the 2025 campaign and now appears to be drawing some legitimate interest from the Vikings as a potential 1B option to McCarthy.
