Ben Affleck refused to wear Yankees hat in ‘Gone Girl’

Pretending is one of the fundamental elements of acting. But for Boston Red Sox fan Ben Affleck, he won’t even pretend to be a Yankees fan.

The New York Times’ Cara Buckley published a story on Thursday saying that Affleck and movie director David Fincher got in a spat over Affleck’s refusal to wear a Yankees cap during filming for a scene in “Gone Girl.”

“That was the only fight David and I had,” Affleck told The Times, “and it was a legitimate fight.”

Fincher wanted Affleck’s character to wear a Yankees cap for a scene at the airport where the character was wearing a hat to evade recognition. Affleck said he “rioted” against wearing the hat of the Bronx Bombers.

“I said, ‘David, I love you, I would do anything for you,’” Mr. Affleck recalled. “‘But I will not wear a Yankees hat. I just can’t. I can’t wear it because it’s going to become a thing, David. I will never hear the end of it. I can’t do it.’ And I couldn’t put it on my head.”

Instead, the two sides came to a compromise: Affleck’s character wore a Mets hat.

The whole thing may seem silly to people who don’t really “get” sports, but everyone else involved in that rivalry certainly understands the passion involved. Shoot, Tom Brady has been seen wearing Yankees and Giants caps and Boston fans will NEVER forget it. You think they would have forgiven Affleck? Heck no. He knows that. He gets it. Not protesting could have been a career-killing move!
