Blue Jays announcer makes ruthless on-air criticism of Yankees

Buck Martinez is letting the hate flow through his veins.

Martinez, the television color commentator of the Toronto Blue Jays, went viral on Tuesday over his brutal on-air criticism of the New York Yankees. The Blue Jays were not even facing the Yankees and instead had a matchup against the Houston Astros at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ont.

But that did not stop Martinez from letting loose on the Yankees during a break in the action in the seventh inning. Upon being informed that the Yankees were down big in their own game on Tuesday against the Detroit Tigers, Martinez went in.

“The Yankees, they don’t have a good team,” said Martinez. “I don’t care what their record is. They have a lot of wild pitches, they make a lot of mistakes in the field, they don’t run the bases very well.

“If they don’t hit home runs, they don’t have a chance to win,” Martinez added of the Yankees.

Here is the full clip of Martinez’s remarks on the air.

Martinez is right that the Yankees, though 80-64 on the year, are a very fundamentally unsound team. They have logged the seventh-most errors in Major League Baseball this season (82) as well as the ninth-most wild pitches (47). The Yankees are also notorious for making mental mistakes on the basepaths and otherwise humiliating themselves on routine plays.

The 76-year-old Martinez might be a bit biased since the 83-61 Blue Jays are division rivals with the Yankees (and currently hold a three-game cushion over them for the AL East lead). But considering that the Yankees also had numerous self-inflicted mistakes on the game’s biggest stage last season, Martinez probably has a point here.
