Brandon Nimmo has a very unusual way of prepping for at-bat

New York Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo has a very unique way of prepping himself for his plate appearances.

During Monday’s game between the Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, Ca., Dodger fans took note of Nimmo’s unusual behavior in the on-deck circle. The veteran outfielder was using a sledgehammer to prepare for his plate appearances, not a bat like most of his peers.

A lot of players use bat weights to warm up their muscles. An average sledgehammer is a lot heavier than that method.

Does it actually work? One would have to ask Nimmo. Entering play Tuesday, he is hitting .232 with nine home runs, and his numbers are down across the board from where they were in 2024. Maybe this is part of an effort to boost them back up.

Nimmo has previously shown his ability to be prepared for unusual circumstances. Perhaps this would fall into the same category.
