We may be witnessing a true changing of the guard this offseason in St. Louis.
According to a report by Jerry Crasnick of ESPN on Thursday, the Cardinals are “in listening mode” on Matt Adams, who is a candidate to be dealt with Matt Carpenter set to be St. Louis’ everyday first baseman in 2017.
The #STLCards are in listening mode on Matt Adams, sources say. He's a change of scenery candidate with Matt Carpenter set to play 1B.

Adams, 28, is club-controlled through the 2018 season. He posted a slash line of .249/.309/.471 with 16 home runs and 54 RBIs in 118 appearances in 2016.
With the Cardinals having pursued top free agents both successfully and unsuccessfully in recent weeks, this latest news could be an indication that Adams is no longer a vital part of the team’s plans for the future.
