CC Sabathia goes viral over hilarious reaction to Angel Hernandez’s retirement
Count CC Sabathia among those who are happy to see Angel Hernandez finally go fishing.
The notorious MLB umpire Hernandez announced on Monday that he is retiring from baseball, effective immediately. Hernandez is walking away after 33 years as an ump and over 3,800 games worked.
The news was met with widespread jubilation from baseball fans as Hernandez had been perhaps the most mistake-prone umpire of all-time. His lowlight reel over the years had grown longer than Tolstoy’s “War and Peace,” and he was even continuing to add to it this season.
In the wake of Hernandez’s announcement, many fans on social media posted threads about some of Hernandez’s worst calls in his career. One such thread was centered around the time that the former Cy Young Award winner Sabathia unloaded on Hernandez after a playoff game.
When he was a member of the New York Yankees during the 2018 ALDS, Sabathia ripped Hernandez as “absolutely terrible” and questioned why Hernandez was even being assigned to the postseason.
On Monday, Sabathia reposted the moment together with a “That’s all folks” GIF from “Looney Tunes” (in reference to Hernandez’s career being over).

Sabathia, who retired from baseball one year later after the 2019 season, had a history with Hernandez even before his viral rant. With all of the enemies that Hernandez made during his umpiring career, many players may also be similarly thrilled about the news that Hernandez is calling it quits.
