Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo admits team is pressing

After a red-hot start to the season, the Arizona Diamondbacks have lost 10 of 11 and are struggling to reverse the trend.

Things continued to get worse after a 4-1 loss to the New York Mets on Sunday, the second time they’ve fallen victim to a series sweep in their last three. Manager Torey Lovullo thinks the team has had a hard time breaking out of the collective slump because everyone is trying to do a bit too much.

“I think everybody here is a victim of trying to do too much, and coaches aren’t exempt from that feeling,” Lovullo said, via Zach Buchanan of the Athletic. “We’re a bunch of people that care, and we’re doing our absolute best. So, I think we all just have to realize what our situation is and just do what we normally do.”

One instance popped up on Sunday, when third base coach Tony Perezchica waved catcher Jeff Mathis, one of the slowest players on the team, into an out at home on a base hit.

“They want it so bad that we’re doing things in a pressing manner,” Lovullo said. “I just want us to remember that we’re good when we’re ourselves.”

The Diamondbacks have the talent to turn things around. Alternatively, maybe they’re cursed — they haven’t won a series since opponents started utilizing the bullpen cart.
