Giancarlo Stanton’s incredible Home Run Derby slashes Marlins’ ticket prices

Giancarlo Stanton

When the Miami Marlins decided to run a promotion offering discounted tickets based on the number of balls Giancarlo Stanton hit out of the park during the Home Run Derby, they might as well have just taken 25 percent off and called it a day.

Just before the Derby, the Marlins announced that they would be knocking a percentage point off future ticket prices for every homer Stanton hit out of Petco Park. How many did the slugger hit? Only a record-setting 61.

That means Marlins fans can use the promo code to get 61 percent off tickets for an upcoming game, right? Unfortunately not. There was fine print, and it stated that the maximum discount was 25 percent.

“What Giancarlo did was so cool that we are working on an additional offer,” Samson told ESPN’s Darren Rovell. “We’re thinking about picking a game and offering 61 percent off.”

According to Rovell, those terms were not specified in an email to fans.

If you ask me, that was a pretty lame promotion. It’s nice to get 25 percent off, but was there any chance Stanton was going to belt less than 25 homers in the entire Derby? The dude mashed 24 in the first round alone, including this moonshot that probably still hasn’t landed. Stanton was hardly even warmed up yet when the offer was maxed out.
