Nationals’ James Wood accomplishes feat last done by Barry Bonds

Washington Nationals left fielder James Wood received a treatment on Sunday that no hitter has been subjected to since Barry Bonds’ heyday.

The Los Angeles Angels intentionally walked Wood four times during Sunday’s game at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, Ca. That makes Wood the first player to be intentionally walked four times in one game since it was done to Bonds in 2004.

According to Stathead, James Wood is the first player to be intentionally walked four times in a game since Barry Bonds in 2004.

Wood still lodged two at-bats in Washington’s 7-4 11-inning victory. He singled in the 1st inning, grounded out in the 4th, and was walked in the 5th, 7th, 9th, and 11th.

It is not quite as the same as the bases-empty intentional walk, which Aaron Judge has been subjected to on occasion. The game situation set up for the Angels to dodge Wood, who entered play Sunday with a .281 average and 22 home runs in 83 games. He and CJ Abrams have easily been the two best hitters on the Nationals all season.

The Angels are not strangers to unusual intentional walks. They worked in the sense that Wood did not actually score and runs in Sunday’s game, but his team still won.
