Could Jason Varitek join Red Sox coaching staff?

The Boston Red Sox need a bench coach after Ron Roenicke was elevated to the manager job, and one familiar name might be in the mix.

While the Red Sox have been mum on who will replace Roenicke as bench coach, Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe offered some reason to believe Jason Varitek, the longtime Red Sox catcher, could be in the mix for the role.

Varitek spent parts of 15 seasons with the Red Sox before retiring after the 2011 campaign. He has long been linked to a coaching career, but has limited his role to a special assistant position since his retirement. There were some rumors that he was actually in the frame to replace Alex Cora, but Roenicke seemed to be the only choice seriously considered. Starting with a position on the staff might be a better way for Varitek to get into coaching if that’s what he wants.
