Hamilton reportedly has been placed into MLB’s substance abuse program as a first-time violator despite his history of drug and alcohol addiction that led him to get suspended from 2003-2005. He still has three years left on his five-year, $125 million contract, with the bulk of the money owed to him.
Hamilton had alcohol relapses in 2009 and 2012 and spoke about his battles in 2006.
“I’m a drug addict,” Hamilton told USA Today in an interview shortly after being reinstated in June 2006. “It’s not terminal, but there is no cure. It’s hell on earth. It’s a constant struggle. And it’s going to be like that for the rest of my life.”
