Mariners reportedly set to trade Jean Segura to Phillies
The Seattle Mariners are rebuilding, and it feels like they’re not stopping until almost all of their recognizable players are gone.
Not only are the Mariners trading Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz to the New York Mets, but they also apparently have a deal in place to send Jean Segura to the Philadelphia Phillies. The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal says Segura would need to approve a trade to Philadelphia.
Once Cano-Diaz to #Mets is official, #Mariners have next deal lined up. Team is in serious talks on a trade that would send shortstop Jean Segura to Philadelphia, sources tell The Athletic. Segura holds full no-trade clause, and would need to approve the deal. H/t @agsnetworks.

Seattle’s return in the deal is unclear, but they reportedly have interest in Phillies former 1st-round pick JP Crawford, who is also a shortstop.
As a reminder, the Mariners were an 89-win team last season, though they vastly outperformed their Pythagorean record. They’ve already traded Mike Zunino and James Paxton, and they have deals lined up to ship out Edwin Diaz, Robinson Cano, and Jean Segura. Kyle Seager, Dee Gordon and Mike Leake will be their only remaining players owed a chunk of money beyond next season.
