Matt Harvey gets crushed in rehab start

Matt Harvey pitched in a rehab start on Saturday, and it really could not have gone much worse.
The Los Angeles Angels starter lasted just 2.2 innings for the Triple-A Salt Lake Bees. He allowed eight hits, eight runs (all earned), two walks and struck out two. Bees broadcaster Steve Klauke says Harvey’s fastball was only 89-90 mph.
A rough 3rd inning for Harvey, as Round Rock scored five runs on six hits and two walks. Final line: 2.2 IP, 8 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 2 BB, 3 K. FB 89-90 in the 3rd.

Of Harvey’s 83 pitches, only 48 were strikes.
Klauke did defend Harvey somewhat.
There were definitely some hard hit balls off of Harvey, but somewhat in his defense, I thought he was being squeezed on the strike zone by the home plate umpire and there were some defensive lapses behind him, although there were no errors charged.

The Angels’ signing of Harvey has been nothing short of a disaster this season. They paid him $11 million guaranteed and he’s gone 2-4 with a 7.50 ERA in 48 innings. He only has three quality starts out of 10 tries and went on the IL in May with a back injury that he kept from the team.
With a rehab start like that, he won’t be helping the team any time soon.
