The New York Mets have signed a pitcher who may have the greatest name in professional sports history, and it seems it has gotten even better with time.
The Mets announced several roster moves on Monday. One of them was that they have signed left-handed pitcher Dicky Lovelady to an MLB contract. The reliever will be active for Monday night’s game against the Atlanta Braves.

Many fans may recognize Lovelady’s name, as he has been around for a while. The 29-year-old has pitched for several different teams, most recently in the minors with the Minnesota Twins. He was on the Toronto Blue Jays’ MLB roster for a brief period at the start of the season but was designated for assignment following a pair of rough outings.
For the most part, Lovelady has gone by Richard Lovelady throughout his career. Obviously, “Dick” is a common nickname for Richard, which fans have been happy to point out as Lovelady has bounced around to different teams.
If the Mets’ official announcement was any indication, Lovelady is now going by “Dicky.” Perhaps he is committed to having one of the best names in professional sports history, if not the best.
Lovelady has a 5.26 career ERA in 110 total MLB appearances.
