MRI on Jered Weaver’s neck reveals nerve tightening

The final year of Jered Weaver’s contract with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim is already off to a rocky start.

According to a report by Pedro Moura of the Los Angeles Times on Friday, an MRI taken on Weaver’s neck revealed nerve tightening. At the moment, however, the righthander is not being shut down and will meet with a doctor to gather more information.

Jered Weaver said the MRI showed tightening of the nerves in his neck. Meeting with a doctor today to learn more. He’s not shut down.

Weaver, 33, raised some concern recently after topping out at 81 mph in a spring game. The three-time All-Star has struggled with progressively declining fastball velocity for many years now.

2015 was a poor year for Weaver as he went 7-12 with a 4.64 ERA and just 90 strikeouts. There’s still hope that the former bona fide ace reinvents himself into a serviceable pitcher at the middle-back of the Halos rotation in 2016. But any sort of injury concern for an aging ex-workhorse with a slowly deadening arm, even if not particularly worrisome right now, makes that hope seem like a bit of a longshot.
