Padres, Wil Myers to discuss extension

The San Diego Padres are moving forward into an uncertain future, but they at least appear to be committed to retaining one core piece.
Padres general manager AJ Preller said on Wednesday that he’s planning to sit down with first baseman Wil Myers’ agent this week to begin discussing a contract extension, per Dennis Lindsey of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Myers, who will turn 26 in December, was the Padres’ best hitter in 2016, slashing .259/.336/.461 with 24 home runs and 98 RBIs. He made his first career All-Star appearance in July and also stole 28 bases.
The news doesn’t come as much of a surprise considering what we heard this past summer. But it at least signals a dedicated effort on the part of the Padres to keeping a guy who could easily mature into one of the top sluggers in the MLB once he hits his prime.
