Report: Phil Nevin considered ‘strong candidate’ for Tigers job

The Detroit Tigers may be willing to try their hand with another first-time big league manager.

According to Jon Heyman of FanRag, San Francisco Giants third base coach Phil Nevin, a former Tigers player and minor league manager, is expected to be a “strong candidate” for Detroit’s vacant managerial position.

Nevin managed for three years in Detroit’s system and has interviewed for five managerial positions in the past. He is expected to be part of an “extensive” search that will cover candidates both inside and outside of the organization.

Brad Ausmus, who the team announced would leave as manager last week, was also a first-time manager, though unlike Nevin, he had no coaching experience at either the major or minor league levels.
