The Texas Rangers did not wait around to name the franchise’s new skipper.

On Friday, the Rangers named Skip Schumaker as the team’s next manager. The team formally announced the decision with a post on X. Schumaker reportedly received a four-year contract, with “multiple other teams” also interested in his services.

Schumaker replaces 70-year-old Bruce Bochy, who led the franchise to its lone World Series crown two seasons ago. The Rangers parted ways with Bochy earlier this week. Several reports that followed pegged Schumaker as the “heavy” favorite to land the job.

Bochy’s departure from the Rangers prompted heavy speculation that he was set to reprise his role as manager of the San Francisco Giants, who also fired their manager on the same day. Giants president Buster Posey has since ruled Bochy out as San Francisco’s next manager.

Schumaker served as a team advisor for the Rangers this past season, which many perceived as part of a succession plan following Bochy’s exit. Schumaker served as the Miami Marlins’ manager from 2023 to 2024.

The 45-year-old won the AL Manager of the Year Award in 2023 when he led the Marlins to the postseason during his first year with the team. The Marlins had a 146-178 record under his stewardship.

Schumaker had a lengthy yet unremarkable MLB career as a player. The outfielder had a solid .278 batting average, but only hit 28 home runs across 11 seasons in the majors.
