Tampa Bay Rays unveil 1979 ‘throwback’ uniforms (Photo)
What you’re looking at above is Joe Madden proudly modeling the 1979 throwback uniform that the Rays will be wearing for their game against the Tigers on June 30. Now, I know what you’re thinking: The Rays began play in only 1998, and even then they were called the Devil Rays. You would be correct on both accounts. So what gives? Did something suddenly go horribly wrong with the space-time continuum? (Damn it, McFly!) Well, not quite.
It turns out these are “hypothetical” throwbacks that the Rays made up just for their “Turn Back the Clock Night” next week. Why a team younger than Justin Bieber is doing a “Turn Back the Clock Night” for 1979 is beyond me. But at least the Rays are doing it right. Those jerseys scream 1970’s just as much as shag carpet does.
