The man who allegedly put together a plot to attempt to murder David Ortiz has been arrested, according to law enforcement officials in the Dominican Republic.
In a tweet sent on Friday, the Dominican Republic National Police said Victor Hugo Gomez has been arrested after it was determined that he was the mastermind behind Ortiz being shot in Santo Domingo earlier this month.

“National Police arrest Victor Hugo Gomez, designated as one of the intellectual authors of the attack, where former baseball player David Ortiz was injured,” the tweet read, according to a translation from Aaron Barker of Click 2 Houston.
Gomez has been wanted by US officials for a variety of drug charges, and Dominican police say he has ties to a Mexican drug cartel.
Prosecutors have claimed Ortiz was not the intended target of the attempted assassination. Shocking footage from the scene showed a man walking up behind Ortiz and shooting him in the back as he sat at a table at a popular establishment in Santo Domingo, which is the former MLB slugger’s hometown. Ortiz underwent surgery in the Dominican Republic and in Boston, and doctors say he is expected to make a full recovery.
