New York Yankees fans are not buying what manager Aaron Boone is selling amid the team’s current losing streak.
Boone offered up a motivational speech to his players behind closed doors after the team suffered a four-game sweep at the hands of the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday. According to infielder Jazz Chisholm, Boone told the Yankees that they were still the “best team in the league” but had hit a “speed bump.”
Aaron Boone quickly addressed the team after getting swept. His message?

“That we’re the best team in the league,” Jazz said. “We knew we were going to hit a speed bump. Just block out the noise and go out there when we get back home in New York and do what we do.”
Boone’s comments did not play well with Yankee fans. Many on social media argued that the team is being coddled, and that Boone and the coaching staff are not holding players accountable even in private.

This must be a typo. Best team in baseball according to Aaron Boone. Can’t wait to run out the same slop tomorrow with no changes or urgency. Maybe Boone will give them an extra hard forehead kiss before the game! https://t.co/UGmibti6NB

The Yankees wound up losing their fifth straight game on Friday, a 6-5 defeat to the New York Mets. They are 6-15 in their last 21 games, and have allowed a 5.5-game AL East lead to slip away. Frustration is obviously high within the fanbase, especially with the perception that the Yankees themselves are lacking a sense of urgency.
Boone is 651-469 as Yankee manager, but the fanbase demands more. Until he gets over the hump and wins a World Series, he will continue to face the narrative that he is not the right man for the job. The Yankees, however, just signed him to a new contract, so the team’s decision-makers still appear to have plenty of faith in him.
