Thunder guard Cameron Payne probably wasn’t expecting his “Welcome to the NBA” moment to come like this.
The 21-year-old Payne appeared on “The Herd” on Wednesday and revealed that he found out on Instagram that former teammate Kevin Durant was signing with the Golden State Warriors.
“I saw a picture on Instagram,” Payne said via Aaron Torres of FOX Sports. “I saw a picture of him, Steph (Curry), and Klay Thompson and it was like ‘Splash Kings’ or whatever…That was the first time I saw anything.
“I’m pretty sure he (Durant) made the decision that was best for him,” Payne continued. “That’s what we all want. Just to make the decision that’s best for you, you just want everyone to be happy…You can definitely get a little upset, but hey, you can’t do nothing about it. It’s his life, his decision, so I’m just happy for him.”
Durant appeared to handle most of the logistics of his exit from Oklahoma City the right way. But it looks like he could have done a better job of managing the situation with his ex-Thunder teammates, as even Durant himself admits that his relationship with another more prominent one may never be the same.
We’ll see how Payne and the rest of the Thunder respond to Durant’s departure on the court, where there should now be more than enough opportunity to go around moving forward into next season.
