Cavaliers-Hornets trade gets NBA veteran 1 team shy of tying all-time record

The Cleveland Cavaliers have done their part in helping Dennis Schroder become the most well-traveled player in the NBA.

News broke Friday that the Cavaliers agreed to trade Schroder to the Charlotte Hornets. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Cavs swapped Schroder for Tre Mann and even had to sent the Hornets some cash to get the deal done.

Assuming the Hornets keep Schroder around to back up Coby White, Schroder will be playing for his 12th unique NBA team across 14 NBA seasons. Only journeyman guard Ish Smith has played for more teams (13) throughout NBA history.

Schroder has a decent chance of matching Smith, given that he likely still has a few good years ahead of him in the league.

Last season was the German’s 12th straight year averaging double digits in scoring. With a FIBA World Cup MVP trophy in Schroder’s cabinet and nearly 100 playoff games of experience, one of those 18 remaining NBA teams may find a spot for him down the line.

Schroder is also two trades shy of matching Trevor Ariza’s all-time record of being included in 11 trades over his NBA career.

However, Schroder may be hoping to stick around in Charlotte a bit longer after getting pinballed across the league over the last half-decade. The man doesn’t know the meaning of stability anymore.

Since leaving the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2020, Schroder has played for nine different teams over his last six seasons, with no stop lasting longer than a single year.
