Chris Paul reportedly likely to return to his former team

Chris Paul’s free agency journey is reportedly likely to end with him returning to one of his former teams.

In an appearance on ESPN’s “NBA Today” Wednesday, Ramona Shelburne suggested that the most likely outcome for Paul is to sign with the Phoenix Suns. Paul played for the Suns from 2020 to 2023, and helped lead them to the NBA Finals in 2021.

“I still think that’s the most likely spot that he ends up in,” Shelburne said. “Devin Booker loves him. They had a great thing going.”

Paul has made clear he would like to play closer to his Los Angeles home. Phoenix is not the perfect solution, but it is a lot closer than San Antonio, where he spent last season with the Spurs.

Though he turned 40 in May, Paul still provides value. He played in all 82 games for the Spurs last season, averaging 8.8 points and 7.4 assists per game for them. He is known as one of the best leaders in the sport, and that could be beneficial to a Suns team that has been a mess in that regard in recent seasons.

The Suns are trying to recover from a Kevin Durant era that did not yield the expected results, and have started to make big moves accordingly. Paul could be a part of stabilizing things for the organization.
