Daryl Morey: Rockets are ‘obsessed’ with beating Warriors
It’s no secret that the road to an NBA title goes through the Golden State Warriors. Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey isn’t dancing around that fact.
Morey told ESPN Radio’s The Ryen Russillo Show on Thursday that his franchise is “obsessed” with knocking off Golden State.
“It’s the only thing we think about,” Morey said. “I think I’m not supposed to say that, but we’re basically obsessed with ‘How do we beat the Warriors?'”
Morey noted that, while it was the San Antonio Spurs who knocked Houston in the 2017 NBA Playoffs, it’s still Golden State that he has to chase.
“Last year, the Spurs knocked us off, so we’re very worried about the Spurs,” Morey said, “They’re always one step ahead of every organization and guard us better than anyone. But we calculated it — it’s like 90 percent if we’re gonna win a title, we’ve gotta obviously beat the Warriors at some point. So we’re extremely focused on that. A lot of our signings and what we do during the year is based on that.”
At 25-5, the Rockets have a better record than the Warriors, though it won’t matter if they fall short in the playoffs. That said, Morey is serious — there are reports that the Rockets are intent on putting together a super team of their own.
