Derrick Rose: If my knee isn’t ready, I wouldn’t mind missing the entire year

The Chicago Bulls have struggled a bit as of late, but ultimately the team has fared surprisingly well in the absence of Derrick Rose. Without the 2011 NBA MVP, the Bulls have compiled a 30-22 record this season. While that is nothing to be ashamed of, very few people would argue that Chicago is a better team without Rose.

Rose says he is making progress during his rehab from reconstructive knee surgery, but he doesn’t sound close to being ready to return. In fact, the point guard made some comments on Wednesday that could be depressing for Bulls fans.

“If it’s where it’s taking me a long time and I’m still not feeling right, I wouldn’t mind missing this year,” Rose said, via FOXSports.com. “I would love to play this year. I would love to. That’s why I approach my rehab and my workout so hard. I’m trying to get back out there on the court as quickly as possible. But if I have anything later on there’s no point.”

Rose is a slasher. His jump shot has improved since he came into the NBA, but the main reason he is one of the NBA’s best players is his ability to get to the hoop. A torn ACL may not be as devastating an injury for someone who relies on perimeter shooting, but Rose needs to regain explosiveness before he can return to form.

“My leg still isn’t feeling right,” he said while explaining that he is unable to dunk. “I know if I could dunk off stride, I know I’d be out there playing. But I can’t. … I’m working on my shot, but you’re not going to label me as a shooter. My game is always going to be driving.”

Some NBA stars believe Rose will be even better when he eventually makes his return, but that remains to be seen. Chicago fans are hoping it will be seen this season. Rose has not ruled out that it may have to wait until next year.
