Everyone made the same joke after Erik Spoelstra’s timeout fiasco
Erik Spoelstra made a crucial mistake that led to a Miami Heat loss on Tuesday night, and the blunder resulted in Jalen Rose trending on social media.
The Heat led the Detroit Pistons 121-119 with under two seconds left in overtime at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Mich. Miami got burned by an excellent ATO play that led to an uncontested Detroit dunk with 1.1 seconds on the clock.
An exasperated Spoelstra quickly called a timeout to set up a final play. But Coach Spo failed to realize that the Heat were out of timeouts (video here). Miami was penalized with a technical foul and a turnover, leading to a stunning 123-121 Pistons win.
The broadcast then panned the camera to Rose, who just so happened to be in attendance for the game.

Rose was part of the “Fab Five” at Michigan alongside Chris Webber, who infamously called a timeout the Wolverines did not have during the closing seconds of the 1993 national title game.
Several fans online joked that Rose surely had flashbacks when seeing Spoelstra’s gaffe.

Both the cameraman and director running the show behind the scenes deserve a raise for the awareness to show Rose at exactly the right time.
The Pistons led by as many as 18 points in the second half. A 40-point eruption from Tyler Herro got the Heat back into the contest. But Herro’s heroics could do nothing to prevent the basketball gods from repaying the state of Michigan three decades later.
