Gregg Popovich may get something much grander than a statue to memorialize his contributions to the city of San Antonio.

On Wednesday, outgoing city councilman Manny Pelaez sent a proposal addressed to San Antonio’s city clerk to rename the San Antonio International Airport in honor of Popovich.

Pelaez justified the city council request by highlighting Popovich’s positive impact on uplifting the local community with his efforts both on and off the court.

“Coach Popovich’s impact on San Antonio is immeasurable,” the proposal read.

“He has not only brought unparalleled success and recognition to our city through his legendary coaching, but he has also become a deeply respected and admired figure within our community. His unwavering commitment to social justice, his philanthropic endeavors, and his genuine care for the people of San Antonio have made him a true icon. He embodies the spirit and values we hold dear.”

Popovich announced earlier this month that he was officially stepping down as the head coach of the Spurs after 29 seasons at the helm. The decision was made after he suffered a medical emergency in April.

Coach Pop has been a pillar of the San Antonio community beyond the confines of the hardwood floor at Frost Bank Center. On top of the five championships Popovich helped the Spurs win, the 76-year-old has also been vocal on several social issues.

Popovich’s legendary coaching career was bound to end at some point. But Coach Pop’s legacy will live on in the Alamo City, potentially in the form of an international airport named after him.
